What is soft water? And what do drinking water systems do? What is the difference between both of them and do I need one or the other or both?

Soft water is water free from minerals deposits. Don't worry they are not the kind of minerals that are what you need in your diet. We are talking about calcium and lime. It's the stuff you see built up on your shower walls, the fading on your glassware and what clogs up your pipes in your home. Once you get rid of the hardness in your water you can use way less soap, hair is softer, and skin is less dry. A drinking water system makes the same water you see from those machines you see in the grocery store. But instead of lugging around a big bottle, carrying it out to your car and hauling it inside your home you can just make it right from a spout on your sink. We do both rental system, purchase or rent with option to buy, your choice.

What about those SALT-less water softeners I have been hearing about?

If those things really worked we would be selling them. The fact is that they DO NOT remove hardness from your water. If you go to their website and look for the fine print you will see where they say that their unit does not remove dissolved minerals. The only way to remove calcium and lime is to use ionic resin featured in a water softener. Sorry folks but its true. Call us or any water treatment company and they will tell you the same thing. Believe us if they really did work we would sell them too.

I want to know more info but I don't want a pushy salesperson in my home or have someone telemarketing me.

H2O Solutions has been around too long to play those games with people. We are straight shooters and will tell you what you want to know without a long drawn out sales pitch or a pushy salesperson twisting your arm. However, to truly know what equipment you need it's best we test your water. When we do a water test we look for what your TDS is (total dissolved solids), GPG (grains per gallon or how hard your water is) and what size your pipes are. It is also important we see where your water system will be installed because sometimes it's a very simple job, other times it takes a lot of work. If you want to talk with one of our water professional please feel free to call or make an internet inquiry. We can get back with you at any time that is good for you…days, week nights, weekends…your choice.

Salt-Less System

If salt-less water systems really worked don't you think we would have them too? Water hardness is nothing more than calcium & lime dissolved in your water. Water hardness is a physical substance, just like water impurities in your drinking water. There is no magic wand you can wave and make them disappear. There are no magnets or electrical systems to wish away, hope away or pray away water impurities. If you read the fine print on these salt-free systems you will clearly see where it says *"Does NOT remove water hardness". The theory with these electric units is that somehow the dissolved rock (water hardness) is modified so that it will not stick or plug up your plumbing. Even if this was true this has nothing to do with all the reason homeowners look for a water softener. Softer hair, smoother skin, spot free dishes and greatly reduced dry skin are the real reason most people look for a water softener. All of these benefits cannot be attained by a magnet or electric water system. We do admit that the gimmick of a salt-free systems sound great, but eventually folks will realize that their water feels exactly the same as it did before. If you truly want soft water free of hard water minerals the only choice is a genuine water softener. If you have any doubt we invite you to test the water yourself. Better yet grab a water sample from your neighbor, then get a sample from one of these salt-free water systems. We guarantee you that you will find no change from the two water samples. If there is any doubt we encourage you to do a simple water test and see for yourself.

Glossary of Water Treatment Terminology

Action Level: The level of lead or copper which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements that a water system must follow.

Activated Carbon: A water treatment medium, found in block, granulated, or powdered form, which is produced by heating carbonaceous materials, such as coal, wood, or coconut shells, in the absence of air, creating a highly porous adsorbent material. Activated carbon is commonly used for dechlorination, organic chemical reduction and radon reduction, and is recognized by the US EPA as the best available technology for reduction of organic chemicals from drinking water.

Acute Health Effect: An immediate (i.e. within hours or days) effect that may result from exposure to certain drinking water contaminants (e.g., pathogens).

Aquifer: A natural underground layer, often of sand or gravel, that contains water.

Alkalinity: The quantitative capacity of water to neutralize an acid; that is, the measure of how much acid can be added to a liquid without causing a significant change in pH. Alkalinity is not the same as pH because water does not have to be strongly basic (high pH) to have high alkalinity. In the water industry, alkalinity is expressed in mg/l of equivalent calcium carbonate. There are three kinds of alkalinity: carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxide alkalinity. Total alkalinity is the sum of all three kinds of alkalinity. Different tests are used to determine the quantity of the different kinds of alkalinities present in water.

Amoeba: A single celled protozoan that is widely found in fresh and salt water. Some types of amoebas cause diseases such as amoebic dysentery.

Automatic water softener (or Automatic Filter): A water softener (or filter) that is equipped with a clock timer, meter, or sensor which automatically initiates the backwash and/or regeneration process at the preset intervals of time. A predetermined number of gallons of water usage or as determined by a sensor. All operations, including bypass of treated or untreated water (depending upon design), backwashing, brining, rinsing, and returning the unit to service are performed automatically.

Bacteria: Unicellular microorganisms which typically reproduce by cell division. Although usually classed as plants, bacteria contain no chlorophyll. Different types of bacterial organisms are often found in drinking water.

Barrier Layer: This refers to the active layer of membrane material that actually separates the impurities from the product stream or permeate. This barrier layer is supported by a micro-porous support layer, usually made from polysulfone, which is cast on a non-woven support material.

Best Available Technology: The water treatment(s) that EPA certifies to be the most effective for removing a contaminant.

Brine: A strong solution of salt(s), such as the sodium chloride or potassium brine used in the regeneration of ion exchange water softeners, but also applied to the mixed sodium, calcium and magnesium chloride waste solution from regeneration.

Water, Health, and Hydration

FAQ's about Drinking Water Systems

  • Why should I drink water, how often and how much?
  • Do mothers, children, babies and seniors have special water needs?
  • How can I integrate more water into my lifestyle?
Why should I drink water, how often and how much? Water, the most common substance on Earth, is also the nutrient that your body needs the most. Between 55 and 75 percent of adult body weight is water (about 10 to 12 gallons). Water is critical in regulating all body organs and temperature as well as dissolving solids and moving nutrients throughout the body. Research has shown that proper hydration may minimize chronic pains such as rheumatoid arthritis, lower back pain, migraines, and colitis as well as lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Because water is naturally low in sodium, has no fat, cholesterol or caffeine and isn't flushed straight through the body like many other beverages, it's the natural solution that your body chooses to help reach its daily fluid quota. Believe it or not, humans lose a pint or more of water every day simply by breathing! Humans normally lose about 10 cups of fluid a day in exhaled air, perspiration, and other bodily secretions. What is lost must be replaced to maintain a fluid balance. Don't wait until you're thirsty to pour a glass of water. By the time you feel thirsty, you've probably already lost 2 or more cups of your total body water. The right amount of water is essential for keeping your body functioning. The average person only consumes six 8-ounce servings of water a day. This is well below the recommended eight servings. How much you really need to drink depends on your body size, activity level and the air temperature. To determine your ideal daily water intake, experts at the Mayo Clinic suggest dividing your weight in half and using this number as the ounces of water you should consume. Going off of this formula, a 125-pound person should indeed consume the recommended eight servings of water each day; however, someone who weighs 175 pounds should aim for eleven servings. If you are physically active, the American Dietetic Association recommends adding one to three cups of water to your daily diet for each hour of physical activity. Once you start exercising, don't stop drinking water. Thirst is not always an adequate indicator of the body's need for fluid replenishment during exercise. Studies show that during vigorous exercise, an important amount of fluid reserves may be lost before you are aware of thirst. During exercise, it's recommended to replenish fluids at least every 20 minutes. You should also drink plenty of water before and after you exercise, regardless of thirst. That headachy feeling you may be experiencing at the end of the day may very well be a sign of dehydration. Because the brain is made up of 75% water, moderate dehydration can often cause lightheadedness, dizziness, headaches and nausea. More severe dehydration may also raise the body's core temperature, effect muscle strength, endurance and coordination as well as increase the risk of cramps, heat exhaustion and life-threatening heat stroke. One of the best ways to recognize dehydration is to pay close attention to the color of your urine—ideally, light to clear urine indicates proper water intake. Do mothers, children, babies and seniors have special water needs? Because what they drink is distributed throughout not only their body but also their child's, expectant mothers should drink six to eight 8-ounce servings of water a day. This recommended water intake may actually be conservative, based on other factors such as weight, age, activity level, weather conditions, etc. Once the baby is born, breast-feeding mothers should be sure to continue replenishing water lost through nursing. It varies according to the child's body weight and activity level. Since infants can't always express thirst, the best way to monitor their hydration level is by checking their diaper which should require frequent changes throughout the day. Active, school-age children tend to dehydrate even more quickly and should be encouraged to drink an 8-ounce serving of water before heading out to play as well as once every 20-30 minutes during play (especially if it's hot outside). The older you are, the more vulnerable you become to the effects of dehydration. As people age, their kidney functions may decrease, their thirst signals may become dulled, their body retains less water, and their overall activity level declines. Older people also tend to take more prescription drugs that can dehydrate their bodies. For these reasons, people over 70 should drink at least the recommended number of water servings per day. How can I integrate more water into my lifestyle? A typical system consists of:
  • Pour the water into an attractive glass or easy-to-use water bottle.
  • Add ice, and a slice of lemon or lime.
  • Chill the water.
  • Drink moderate-size portions spread over the course of a day, rather than drinking it all at one time.
  • Keep a bottle of water on your kitchen counter.
  • Visit the office water cooler, and take a water break instead of a coffee break
  • Make drinking water a habit—drinking water at the same times each day will make it much easier.
